Throwback to April

Hello!

Mun viimeiset kuukaudet on ollut todella kiireiset ja täynnä ohjelmaa, minkä takia mun postaus huhtikuulta on jäänyt kokonaan. Aion kuitenkin nyt korjata tämän asian ja kertoa mun kuulumiet huhtikuulta ja Chesterin kolmen viikon pääsiäisloman ajalta. Seuraavassa postauksessa kertoilenkin sitten mun viimesistä viikoista ja lähtöfiiliksistä!

I have been very busy for the last months which is why my post from April has only been finished by now... Anyway,  I am going to fix it right now and I have written about my Easter holidays and trips to the Netherlands and Scotland. In the next post, I will be writing about my last weeks in Chester and my feelings about going back to Finland!

Varsity and Volleyball

Sana: "lentopallo" tuntuu olevan läsnä jokaisessa tekstissä, jonka olen tänne rustannut ja jatkukoon tämä ilmiö myös tässä tekstissä! Maaliskuussa pelasimme Varsity-pelit, mikä siis tarkoittaa, että kilpailimme/pelasimme Salfordin yliopistoa vastaan todella monessa lajissa, joista yksi oli lentopallo. Tunnelma oli todella hyvä ja yleisö kannusti! Oli kuitenkin todella huvittavaa kuulla jälkikäteen, kuinka yleisössä todella moni oli kysellyt lentopallon sääntöjä ja koko runkoa kyseiselle pelille. Lentopallo tuntuu olevan todella vieras laji Iso-Britanniassa! Anyway, pelin kuitenkin hävisimme, mikä oli harmittavaa, mutta pelillisesti se oli kuitenkin ihan ookoo hyvä peli. Päivä oli mukava ja jäimmekin katsomaan muutamia muita lajeja joksikin aikaa.

The word; "Volleyball" seems to appear in every post I write and I am not going to make any exceptions this time either! In March our Uni played against Salford Uni in different sports and this "tournament" was called Varsity. Our volleyball team was one of the teams playing and it was such a nice experience and there were a lot of people watching and cheering at the matches. Unfortunately we lost but we played relatively well, so after a while it didn't feel so bad. I heard afterwards from my friends that a lot of people who were watching the match, had been asking around the rules of volleyball. It definitely seems that people don't know much about volleyball which is a shame, because it is a nice sport! We stayed behind to watch some other sports as well, all in all, the tournament was nice and interesting!

Netherlands

Chesterin yliopistossa meillä oli 3 viikon pääsiäisloma mikä kuulostaa todella hullulta, sillä Suomessa pääsiäisloma kestää sen 4 päivää.... Anyway, Chester on tosi hiljainen tuolloin, sillä todella paljon opiskelijoita lähtee kotiin. Ei siis käy kieltäminen, etteikö Chester olisi opiskelija kaupunki. Alkuloman vietinkin mun tehtävien parissa, sillä mulla oli yksi essee ja yksi portfolio tehtävänä huhtikuun alkuun ja yksi toukokuun alussa. Reilun viikon päästä matkustin kuitenkin Alankomaihin Gabyn luokse! Gaby ja hänen siskonsa hakivat mut lentokentältä, josta ajelimme sitten noin 3 tuntia Gabyn kotiin. Matkanhan ei olisi pitänyt kestää aivan niin kauaa, mutta teimme pienen harharetken lähelle Belgian rajaa... :D Pidennetty matka ei kyllä haitannut yhtään, sillä me pälpätettiin koko se aika ilman taukoja. Gabyn sisko kuulemma mainitsikin, että "Kylläpä se puhuukin paljon"! Siltä se tuntui kyllä minustakin, mutta oli niin paljon päivitettävää Gabylle, että juttua riitti... :D hahaha! Lopulta saavuimme kohteeseemme ja tapasin loput Gabyn perheestä. He olivat todella ihania ihmisiä ja oli tosi mukava tavata heidät!

In the University of Chester, we have three weeks Easter holidays, which seems crazy in comparison to our 4 day holidays in Finland. Anyway, a lot of students go home during the holidays and the city is rather quiet during those weeks. Chester is definitely a student city! First half of my holidays I spent with my assignments. I had a portfolio and one essay due at the beginning of April and one at the beginning of May. The second half of my holidays I traveled to the Netherlands to visit Gaby! Gaby and her sister picked me up from the airport and then we drove for 3 hours to her home. The journey wasn't supposed to last for 3 hours but apparently we took a little road trip closer to the boarder of Belgium by accident! ;) We literally talked the whole three hours through and apparently Gaby's sister was surprised how much I speak. Hahaha, what can you do, gossip must be updated! ;) Finally we reached our destination and I also met Gaby's family. It was lovely to meet them and they all very kind and sweet people! Thank you for having me there!

Yhtenä päivänä matkustimme Amsterdamiin, josta sitten illalla jatkoimme matkaa Groningeniin, jossa Gaby opiskelee. Amsterdamissa kiertelimme lähinnä kaupunkia, joka oli kyllä todella kaunis. Anne Frank taloon olisin halunnut mennä sisälle asti, mutta jono oli aivan liian pitkä, joten näimme sen vain ulkopuolelta. Lähinnä mieleeni jäi Amsterdamin kauniit kanaalit ja tulppaanit sekä polkupyörien määrä! Olin kyllä tietoinen, että polkupyörät on todella suosittuja Alankomaissa, mutta en ymmärtänyt alkuunkaan, että niitä olisi noin paljon! Niitä oli aivan joka puolella!

We traveled to Amsterdam for one day and then in the evening we traveled to Groningen where Gaby is studying.  In Amsterdam we mainly walked around the city which is super beautiful. I saw the Anne Frank House from outside but we didn't go in because the queue was way too long. Besides the beautiful canals and tulips, the amount of bicycles still surprised me... I had been told that there are a lot of bicycles in the Netherlands but I still had no idea that there would be that much ! Literally, there were bicycles everywhere!

Groningenissa tapasimme lisäksi muita Erasmus-vaihdossa olleita, jotka olivat meidän kanssa yhtaikaa Chesterissä. Oli todella ihana nähdä Carolin, Akke ja Marc. Heidän kanssaan menimmekin katsomaan Improvisaatioteatterin komedia näytöstä, joka oli kyllä todella hauska! Muut päivät kiertelimmekin Groningenia sekä yhtenä iltana lähdimme Gabyn kanssa juhlimaan ja kiertelmään paikalliset baarit ja klubit. Ilta oli superhauska ja unnon throwback Chesteriin! Seuraavan kerran pääsemmekin jihlimaan Suomen maalla, sillä Gaby, Mary, Pip, Haydn, Daniel ja Chris tulevat moikkaaman mua Suomeen muutamaksi päiväksi! En malta odottaa!!

In Groningen we met some other Erasmus students from Chester, Carolin, Akke and Marc. It was so nice to see them again! We went to watch this "play" or improvisation theatre which was in English. It was very nice ! Rest of the time we explored Groningen and of course Gaby and me had out big-night-out! We had such a good time going through different clubs and bars in Groningen. Like old times in Chester ;). Next big-night-out will be in Finland because Gaby, Mary, Pip, Haydn, Daniel and Chris will visit me next summer! Can't wait!!!

Scotland

Heti seuraavana aamuna, kun oli palannut Alankomaista, lähdimmekin kohti Skotlantia Manonin kanssa. Matkustimme Glasgowiin junalla ja sitten jatkoimme vielä Invernessiin. Glasgow oli mukava kaupunki ja melko moderni, kun taas Invernessissä tuntui, että aika on pysähtynyt. Pystyimme esimerkiksi todella harvassa paikassa maksamaan kortilla. Loch Ness sijaitsee todella lähellä Invernessiä, joten yhtenä päivänä otimme bussin erään linnan raunioille, joka sijaitsee aivan Loch Nessin vieressä. Järvi oli valtava ja maisema todella kaunis. Harmillisesti emme kuitenkaan nähneet Loch Nessin hirviötä matkallamme ;)...

The day after I got home from Netherlands, I started my trip to Scotland with Manon. We traveled to Glasgow by train and then to Inverness. Glasgow was a nice city, however, rather modern. We went to see some old cemetery (I know, it's creepy) and some museums. Inverness on the other hand was a town that seemed to have stopped its development. Everything seemed rather old and we weren't able to pay by card in several places. Loch Ness is very close to Inverness so one day we took the bus to the lake and Castle. It was so beautiful and totally worth it! It's a shame that we couldn't see the monster.. ;)

 

Chester Life

Edellä mainittujen reissujen jälkeen palasin Chesteriin ja olikin aika alkaa työstämään viimeistä esseetä. Muun vapaa-ajan olenkin viettänyt kavereiden kanssa, sillä se fakta, että mulla on enää todella vähän aikaa jäljellä, on alkanut tulla kokoajan selvemmäksi. Suurin osa erasmus-kavereistani on lähtenyt jo tammikuussa/helmikuussa, ja olenkin sen jälkeen viettänyt suurimman osan ajastani brittiläisten kavereideni kanssa. Heistä kertoilenkin enemmän seuraavassa postauksessa!

After those trips, I mainly studied and tried to finish my last essay. All the other free time I mainly spent with my friends because it became clearer and clearer the I wouldn't have much time left. Most of my Erasmus friends in Chester left already in January/February and after that I've mainly spent my time with some of the people from volleyball and some others as well... :) I'm so happy that I've got to know those people and I will write about them more in the next post! 

Milla
